Bacon and Anchovy Imo's Pizza - 3/31/11

Since it is opening day of Cardinal baseball, I figured that I would treat myself to a special meal for the game.  That could only be a bacon and anchovy pizza from Imo's, the square beyond compare.  This is the picture of the day.

Working nights is tough on Pete - 3/30/11

I recently changed from working days to working nights.  To be honest I'd rather work the night shift.  However, it appears my change has been tough on Pete as well.  As you can see by his midafternoon on the pillow with a blanket nap.  He has no idea that he is a D-O-G.  This is the picture of the day.

A trip to the Hill before bootcamp - 3/29/11

Denny's departure for Marine Corps bootcamp is quickly approaching, Sunday afternoon.  We decided to make one last trip to our favorite lunch spot, Gioia's, before he leaves.  We were joined by one of my past football players and Denny's good friend Tyler Rulo.  I am anxious and proud of him for joining.  I have to admit I will miss just grabbing him and heading to lunch.  This is the picture of the day.

A future photographer - 3/27/11

Today Madison broke out one of her favorite gifts from her birthday - a camera.  It goes without saying this warms my heart.  I know how enjoyment photography has brought the McHawes family through the years.  Hopefully she catches the bug like so many other McHawes family members have.

A few minutes after this picture, I had my camera out trying to catch a couple wildlife photos, I turn around and there she is with hers!  Loving it.  This is the picture of the day.

Madison celebrates 7 years of being our Princess - 3/26/11

We decided with Madison's rapidly approaching 7th birthday (4/4/04) and this also being the same day my son leaves for bootcamp, we would celebrate early.  We decided to surprise here with a surprise skating party.  After all the preparations and the horrible weather it was a great time.  Happy Birthday baby.  This is the picture of the day.

My new shirt with a very important message - 3/25/11

Today, I spent some the best money that I have ever spent on a shirt.  To explain I must take you back in time a few days ago.  I am having lunch with my good friend Ben Difani.  we are talking about the exploits of one Mr. Charlie Sheen and we both agree that we would like to party with him.  This is when the idea came to life.  Ben's apprentice's family owns a t-shirt company.  As you can see for yourself this is the result of the conversation.  This is the picture of the day.

Dad, I wanna watch Cardinal baseball & when does football start? - 3/24/11

I guess you can say that we are sports fans at our home.  Tonight Madison informed me that Cardinal Baseball starts next week.  She then followed that up with the question of when do the Herky Blackcats play football game.  Her and her sister have already made sure they were going to get to come to practice with me.  As you can tell by Madison's shirt, she's ready.  This is the picture of the day.

Another good sign - 3/23/11

Each day that passes I start seeing more signs that old man winter is packing his bags and leaving.  I know we still have a few cool days ahead of us, but there is hope.  The trees are budding leading into my subdivision.  This is the picture of the day.

I am not scared to beat up a 5 year old & insulting my girl

Parenting is the most rewarding thing that I have ever done in my life.  There is nothing in this world that I enjoy more than being a Dad.  I love my three children with everything I am.  With this being said as a parent you become, I guess the best way to describe it is hyper sensitive to anything that hurts or upsets your child.  I am all about discipline and learning the tough lessons that life brings with it.  However, that doesn’t mean when someone else teaches them the lesson that you don’t feel like kicking their crotch onto their shoulders.  There is a fine line between sheltering them and raising victims.  I have always taught my kids to be respectful, don’t be rude or hurtful and to never start it.  Yet that doesn’t mean you have to endure a steady diet of someone else’s crap.

Well that brings me to one of those incidents that occurred this week.  My youngest daughter, Marli came home the other day and was upset.  I find out from her sister, a little boy had made fun of her
t-shirt and said it was “weird”.  The shirt is one that Marli’s grandma had brought her back from a vacation to South Dakota.  It is a typical vacation from where ever shirt, nothing weird about it. Marli even asked the boy why it was weird, because her grandma had bought it and she likes it.  Yet this upset her and she didn’t want to wear it when we were going to the park afraid other kid’s would think it was weird as well.  I assured her the shirt was fine and not to pay any attention to this 5 year old protagonist of insults.  We went to the park without incident.  This should be the end right?  Well my inner switch was flipped because my child was insulted and I felt like kicking this kid’s parent’s ass for raising this little smart ass.  I told you I was hyper sensitive.  No apology.

The next morning I told Marli to ignore him if he said anything, and if he did say something and she had to respond, tell him he has big ears.  Now mind you I have never seen this kid he may have little smurf ears or look like the second coming of Dumbo, I dunno.  But, it seemed like a good response.  Yes, I know extremely childish, but hey he hurt my baby’s feelings.  She then tells me he has ears that are pointy like an elf.  Bingo! Now I have something to work with.  I tell her to say, “hey elf ears why don’t you head back to the workshop and make me a toy.”  I am not encouraging you to assist your children in orchestrating come back insults.  I know it was childish on my behalf.  But, don’t screw with my kids.  I can’t help myself.

After she got on the bus for school, I thought to myself, that wasn’t a good thing to do.  She comes home that afternoon and says nothing about the Pinocchio insulting her anymore, so I let it go.  All was good until my wife comes home and we are eating dinner.  It was at this time Marli decides to tell me she called the kid elf ears like I TOLD her to do.  I did not have to look up to feel the bone chilling stare from my wife.  Thus the lecture began, for both of us.  I told Marli I was wrong and she shouldn’t always repeat what Dad says.  I also said she should apologize.  She should tell the kid she is sorry he has elf ears.  We all bust out laughing.  Well the girls and I did.  My wife didn’t agree with my timing to tell a joke.  Oh well, I will survive to make other parenting mistakes.  The bottom line my kid was not insulted by the hobbit again and all is good.

Nothing better than a used book store - 3/22/11

Whenever I get the opportunity I love to hit the bookstores, used or new and just wonder the aisles looking for new books to read.  My wife hates them and says I am book nerd.  I hit the use store in Arnold today.  the owner estimates she has between 30 - 40 thousand books on hand.  Here is a shot from one of the aisles.  It is the picture of the day.

Herky Blackcat Baseball - 3/21/11

The Cats are hitting the diamond this year with a new Coach, Zach Bone.  The Herky program is one of success with a couple State Championships under its belt.  Here is what this year's team looks like.  It is the picture of the day.

Former Marine Drill Instructor runs for Mayor of Festus - 3/20/11

Retired Marine Sergeant Major, Vietnam Veteran and Drill Instructor Sam Richards is running for the Mayor of Festus this upcoming election.  I have known Sam for 20+ years.  In addition to his service to our country, he also served his community as a police officer.  Sam has decided to run for mayor.  He would be outstanding in this position.  It goes without saying the integrity, honesty and leadership are without question. I have my sign in the yard.  This is the picture of the day.

Medals from the YMCA - 3/19/11

The McHawes girls finished up a successful basketball season at the YMCA today.  It was quite the season.  A big thanks to the coaches that endured weekly practice and games with 5 and 6 year olds.  Thank you very much.  We are now looking ahead to softball season.  In the meantime Madison and Marli proudly display their medals.  This is the picture of the day.

Happy St. Patrick's Day - 3/17/11

Happy St. Patty's Day to all.  Here are my girls with their green on and heading to school.  Madison told me after school, "If we had an "O" in front of our last name it would be an Irish name."  I asked what about the "Mc" on our name?  She responds, "oh, never thought of that."  This is the picture of the day.

My Mom and I - 3/16/11

Today's picture features my Mother.  I am truly blessed to have the Mom that I have.  I will say she is as tough, hot tempered and bull headed as she is kind, loving and ever supportive.  I learned growing up with her that she had no reservations on popping your chops or set up through the night when you were scared as a kid (usually because of the horrific ghost stories she would tell).  She is the Mom that participated in everything and no one on this earth could save you from her if you screwed with one of her kids.  The hot tempered Indian lady that traded frogs to the arm till I was a senior in high school never muttered the words "wait till your Dad gets home", she handled it herself.

She would treat any kid that came to the house like they were one of her own.  That was great and could be bad if you screwed up.

With all that being said she is the most unconditional loving Mother I have ever known.  I love her dearly and I thank God for making me her son.  She is the picture of the day.  I love you Mom.

Prepping for band pictures - 3/15/11

Last night I had the opportunity to photograph the concert band at Herculaneum High School.  They will be competing in their State competition next week.  Good luck Cats.  Here is the view from the balcony where I had to take the picture from.  This is the picture of the day.

Another nominee to go the front of the death line

Here is another scumbag that needs a quick date with the Grim Reaper.  I am going to judge the book by the cover, would you let this freak watch your child?

A north St. Louis County man is accused of killing a two-year-old boy.
Donye Calvin, 22, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of two-year-old D’mond Staples.
St. Louis County police were called to a home in the 2600 block of Tyrell in North County on Friday afternoon for a report of a sick child.
When they arrived, officers found D’mond unconscious.
He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
After conducting an investigation, authorities arrested Calvin who was babysitting D’mond at the time. Calvin is D’mond’s mother’s boyfriend. He is being held on $500,000 bond.

Is this still "W"'s fault? - 3/13/11

As I was getting gas to day, I couldn't help but think as they were preparing the amputation of an arm for gas price, Is this still W's fault.  That is all I heard from the Dems was how W was at fault for gas prices.  Who's fault is it now?  This is the picture of the day.

The name's Rango! Much better than the last trip to the movies - 3/12/11

The McHawes family ventured back to the theater this afternoon after basketball.  I was much more excited and ready today.  The last trip was quite painful.  I would have to say I think I wanted to see today's movie as bad as the girls did.  Rango.  I was well worth the price.  It is today's picture of the day.

Jack Buck - That's a Winner - 3/11/11

A lifetime Cardinal fan and from a family where Cardinal baseball is a form of religion, there is only one voice, Jack Buck.  I remember as a kid my parents turning down the sound on the TV and the radio up so we could here Jack call the game.

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Buck one time.  He acted like we had known each other forever.  I recently picked up his autobiography on Amazon.  It is what I am reading now.  It is the picture of the day.

Marli driving the Suburban - 3/10/11

This is a scary sight.  We get to the subdivision tonight after dinner and Marli hops into the driver's seat and took over.  Scary now and will be scary in 10 years as well.  This is the picture of the day.

Herky High School new construction - 3/8/11

Many hated to see the old building of Herky High School go.  Since the demolition several workers have diligently worked in bringing the new building to life.  Here is one view of a portion of the new building.  The time line is completion by this fall.  This is the picture of the day.

A local garden - 3/7/11

Mom's Garden is a local piece of land in Festus.  There is quite a story behind this garden.  The piece of land has been in this lady's family for a 100 years.  She, the caretaker is in her late 80's.  She tends to the garden on a daily basis.  She says it is in memory of her mother who had passed away.  The garden and its story was featured in a book that was released this past year highlighting the local area and the people that live here.  This is the picture of the day.

World Series Champion Chicago Cubs collage - 3/6/11

I am a St. Louis Cardinal fan to the bone.  However, I couldn't pass the opportunity to pay tribute to all of the World  Series Championship Chicago Cubs teams over the past 100 years.  Here is a photo collage of all of the teams.  I am sure all true Cardinal fans will tip their hat in honor of all of the great championship teams of the Cubs.  Oh, and I hate the Cubs.  This is the picture of the day.

What would Tony Soprano do? 3/5/11

We have all heard to turn the other cheek.  Try to get along with others or sometimes it is best to just walk away.  Some of us have a little more difficulty doing that than others.  Although I know what is best, I do not always have the ability to do it.  No matter the outcome, you have to be honest, brutally honest.  There also times that a pop to the chops might be the only thing to get your point across.  I am not saying that it is right, but it may be the only option.  With all of that being said, I refer to my TV idol and hero Tony Soprano.  There are times when the Tony treatment is the only thing someone is going to grasp.  In certain situations you have to ask, "what would Tony Soprano do?"  This is the picture of the day.

A flash of happiness at the end of the work day - 3/4/11

My first day back to work, after a week off was about as fun as using a weedeater to scratch your jock itch.  With that being said as I opened the garage I saw some the first bit of happiness scribbled on a dry erase board in my garage.  It has been there awhile but it yelled at me today when I walked in.  This is the picture of the day.

JP makes the front page - 3/3/11

Another blog entry about Josh Pruno.  JP had a front page and interior 2 page article about his journey on the path to stardom in Nashville in today's paper.  I know that I have written about Josh a few times now.  I will be writing more.  You can bank on the fact you will be seeing a lot more of him in the future.  This is the picture of the day.

It is a sh*tty job, but someone has to do it - 3/2/11

There are many reasons to want to have children.  As they grow older there are some that move to the fore front of reasons.  For an example so you can have them do the jobs you don't want to do yourself.  Example #1 - my son is scratching for every dollar he can find to go to Spring Break with some of his friends.  Supply and Demand.  I have $20 bucks that he needs.  I also had a several piles of dog crap in the yard that needed to be picked up.  It was a great trade and it is the picture of the day.

It is a sinus infection, not Bieber fever

Soon after returning home from 2 of the most painful hours of my life (the Bieber movie) on Sunday, I started feeling pretty sick.  I thought maybe it was from the movie or maybe I had the terminal illness of Bieber fever or whatever it is called.  I was afraid the irreparable damage had been done to my system.  I got up this morning and couldn't take it anymore.  I was relieved to find out after an Urgent Care trip and 3 antibiotics, it was a sinus infection.  I will live.  This is the picture of the day.
