The USS Midway - 7/27/11

Growing up I heard my Father talk about his days on an aircraft carrier during Vietnam.  Today I had the opportunity to take a tour of the carrier the USS Midway.  It was something to see and if you have never seen one, do it.  It also re-affirmed that I am glad I was a Marine and on the land.  Here is a view for the front of the flight deck.  It is the picture of the day.

Speaking of Mexico - 7/26/11

Thinking about some of my past excursions I decided to make a run for the border.  However, this time I stayed in the States.  This is the picture of the day.

Back to the USMC, School Of Infantry - 7/25/11

It had been 21 years since I had walked on the dirt of SOI.  Today after the training was done for the day, I made my way back down Basilone Rd at Camp Pendleton.  For the most part it had remained unchanged since I was here and last my guaranteed contract for going to Tijuana for the Marine Corps Birthday.  This is the picture of the day.

Going back to Cali - 7/24/11

I made my return to the West Coast, back to San Diego.  Also, known as Heaven on Earth.  I am here for a week for training.  As I was waiting for my rental car, I noticed some the city had really turned in to a zoo.  This is the picture of the day.

Josh Pruno, Full Circle - 7/23/11

On Saturday night, Josh played before a sold out crowd at one the local watering holes.  This was the first place that JP played "out".  Needless to say, he was welcomed by a few hundred of his most loyal fans.  This is the picture of the day.

JP at the Jefferson County Fair - 7/22/11

This past Friday night Josh Pruno hit the stage at the Jefferson County Fair.  Even with the sweltering heat, He put on a great show.  What a great response from the crowd and hats off to all that braved the heat to support the hometown boy.  Here is a picture from inside the green room before the show.  This is the picture of the day.

Football camp has started - 7/19/11

My girls decided to treat me to an early birthday dinner tonight.  They are going to be out of town and I have football camp, so we decided to night was the night.  The dinner we all agreed on was Sushi, our favorite.  Here is a picture from dinner of me and my girls.  This is the picture of the day.

A must see movie - 7/16/11

Horrible Bosses.  This is a must see flick.  It is absolutely hilarious. On top of that, if you think Jennifer Anniston is even remotely cute ( side note : She is smoking hot for the record) you have to see her performance.  This is a laugh out loud movie.  This is the picture of the day.

The "beautiful" landscape of Kansas

After a great week in Denver, I arrived at the airport to learn all flights from Denver to St. Louis (or anywhere) were cancelled and the quickest I could leave Denver was Sunday morning.  that was not going to work.  Chris Ferguson and I decided to Road Trip it to get back.  This was our 2nd work trip in a row that ended up like Planes, Trains and Automobiles.  14 hours later I was back in Festus.  I observed that coming from the gorgeous scenery of Colorado and into Kansas, that Kansas had NOTHING to offer!!!  There was a sign in Kansas that said "Free Land for Industry".  They are giving it away and still can't get people to mover there.  Kansas, this is the picture of the day.

A visit to the Team USA Olympic Training Facility - 7/14/11

Today, I had the privilege of visiting the Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs.  Awesome.  There is a guided tour that starts with a video of great Olympic moments and a preview of future athletes.  You then visit several of the training facilities on the compound and learn about how the place operates.  It was a great stop along the trip.  This is the picture of the day.

During this past few months of travel, my co-worker and I have been on a quest of the best steaks that each city has to offer.  Today in the Mile High city of Denver we once again attacked and defeated a Fogo De Chao.  Here is the proof of the slaughter.  This is the picture of the day.

Bigfoot and a trip up Pike's Peak

My job has brought me to Colorado Springs.  Any visit to this area would not be complete without a trip up Pike's Peak.  I will say if you are not a fan of heights do not make this trip.  I am not a fan of heights.  Regardless I made it to the summit.  The view was great and I am glad I did it.  However, I will not make the trip again, ever.  The most intriguing part of this trip was the Bigfoot crossing signs.  This is the picture of the day.

A McHawes going away dinner - 7/9/11

Tonight the McHawes family gathered for a going away dinner for our new Marine.  Even though he doesn't leave until Tuesday, I have to leave on Sunday, so this is our last night together for awhile.  The destination Cusanneli's.  All big occasions our honored here and has been that way since the 60's.

Denny's leave has seem to have flown by for me.  I am sure not near as fast as it seems for him.  I can't begin to tell you how proud we are of him.  I will see you soon son.  I love you and Semper Fidelis.  This is the picture of the day.

The Bulls Alumni vs the current Bulls - 7/8/11

While my son was in High School he played baseball for a traveling select team, the Bulls.  Tonight the Bulls alumni played the current team.  Denny dropped a great bunt and made a diving catch in the outfield.  The "Old" guys showed a little long ball action as well.  They won 12 -10.  Here is my son and one of my former football players and great guy, Tyler Rulo.  This is the picture of the day.

Ghetto ride with spray painted graphics - 7/7/11

Upon returning from lunch at Bogarts in Soulard, I noticed this fantastic ghetto ride.  I circled the block and came back to snap this picture.  The best part, the graphics on the side of the car appeared to have spray painted, as in from a can of Krylon.  This is the picture of the day.

Take me out to the ballgame - 7/6/11

What a great night the new Jarhead and I made our way into field box seats at Busch Stadium.  It was a great game even though after 13 innings the Cards came up short.  This is the picture of the day.

Lunch on the Hill

Since my son had left for boot camp, all he talked about was coming home and eating at Gioias Deli.  We made the trip to the Hill today, only to find out they are closed until the 11th for vacation.  Luckily, my son does not go back till the 12th.  So we found another spot on the Hill for lunch.  This is the picture of the day.

The Few, the Proud, the McHawes Kids - 7/4/11

As many of you have probably noticed there has been a re-occurring theme for the past few days, my children and the fact my son is a now a US Marine.  I am just a "little" proud of him.  He stopped by yesterday morning.  This is the picture of the day.

Waiting on their Brother - 7/3/11

The girls were out of town when their brother came home from bootcamp.  Tomorrow morning will be the first  they get to see him.  As you can see they are ready.  This is the picture of the day.

A new Marine comes home - 7/2/11

My son's family are not the only ones that are proud of him.  Here is a sign from a local business.  This is the picture of the day.

Graduation Day - 7/1/11

The day is finally here.  My son officially joins the brotherhood of the United States Marine Corps.  As I watched him march across the same Parade Deck that I did 21 years ago, there are no words to describe the feeling.  I am so proud of him and what he has done.  In addition to my son graduating a fellow platoon member Lonnie Baker earned the title as well.  Lonnie has felt like a son to me.  I have coached him in football since he was about 6 or 7.  I could type for hours on how much this day has meant to me.  However, I will wrap it with the only words that I know that are truly fitting, Semper Fidelis.  These are the pictures of the day.

Family Day - 6/30/11

It has been a long 3 months.  I know it has seemed longer for those in training.  This morning we got to see the Moto Run and then the new Marines were cut loose on base liberty.  This was the 1st time I got to speak to or see my son.  To say emotions are high is an understatement.  I can not put into words the overwhelming pride that I felt when I saw him.  We walked all over the base and took some pictures.  We even made our way back to the Yellow Footprints.  We stood on them together.  These are the pictures of the day.

1st Night on the Depot - 6/29/11

It has been many, many years since the last time I walked through the gates of MCRD San Diego.  I am staying in the billeting are a of the Depot, back in a barrack's room.  I decided to take a walk in the evening to see what had changed.  This is one of the first signs that I saw.  The most important job in the Corps.  This is the picture of the day.
